At Valerie Fairbourn Photography, photographic integrity is about how images are created, not just how they look. It means working with intention, consent, and awareness at every step. From how you're guided during a session to how your images are edited, stored, and ultimately delivered. This philosophy shapes every part of my work, ensuring your portraits are created with care, handled responsibly, and made to last.

What Photographic Integrity Means in My Work

Photography isn't neutral.

It asks people to be seen - sometimes more clearly than they've ever allowed themselves to be. That kind of seeing deserves intention, consent, and care. At every step.

Portraits aren't just images - they're records of presence. They're the capturing of light - and what that light touches.

And just as importantly, those images should give something back: a steadier sense of self. A memory you can return to. A reminder of how something felt, not just how it looked. Memory, identity, relationship, and proof of existence - sometimes for moments that won't come again.

Because of that, the way your images are created matters just as much as the final result.

My process is intentional. I don't rush in any part of it. Time, clarity, and space are all part of the care. At the same time, when you know what you want and are genuinely excited, I'll meet that energy and cheer you on. I won't slow things down for the sake of it - I move at the pace that gives you room to be you.

And that care extends beyond the session itself. How your images are handled, edited, stored, and delivered are handled with just as much thought and intention.

Conversations around photographic integrity are not new. The Photography Ethics Centre explores ethical questions around authorship, consent, and responsibility. They offer a broader context for why ethics in image creation and handling matters.

AI Use, Photographic Integrity, and Client Privacy

Even some old-school tools in professional software now operate on AI-based frameworks, so those may be present at the most basic level. However, I do not use generative AI in any part of the creative process - including posing, shooting, editing, retouching, or delivery.

I will never load your image into an AI platform. Neither will any associate of Valerie Fairbourn Photography.

Your images are created through observation, skill, experience, and human decisions - not algorithms trained on questionable and stolen data. What you see in your final portraits is the result of light, timing, connection, and intentional craft. Nothing artificial about it.

Because I retain the copyright to the images I produce, any person who uploads an image created by Valerie Fairbourn Photography into an AI platform is in violation of copyright law. More than that, it's a violation of consent, privacy, and trust - and it will be handled accordingly, in protection of both my work and my clients.

This policy exists out of respect for people.

Conversations about photographic integrity also intersect with broader discussions around consent, privacy, and emerging technology. Organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation have written extensively about ethical concerns related to AI and data use.

What This Means for You

It means:

• your images are personal to you and no one else
• your likeness is never used to train or feed artificial systems
• your portraits remain yours and are made to last - they are reality, craft, and intention - and are images you can trust years from now

Valerie Fairbourn Photography holds the the responsibility of authorship and copyright - I'm not here to own your story, but to protect it. Your images should land where you want them to land, and live the life you choose for them.

My role isn't just to make something beautiful, it's to work with photographic integrity - creating mindfully, holding space, and delivering images that honor you in the moment and the future you carry.

That is the standard I work from.
